About Eurocities
Europe is coming together. Already 27 countries are part of the European Union, with a total of around 500 million citizens - most of them living in large cities and urban areas. More countries will be joining the EU in the coming years, and cooperation with neighbouring states is being strengthened.

Europe is changing people's lives. Each year, more of us are travelling across borders to study, to work, to do business, to make friends, or just to visit. The impact of Europe can also be seen at the local level in cities and neighbourhoods - for example with regard to urban regeneration, pollution and waste, workers' rights and business opportunities.

Europe is facing a whole series of big challenges that require a determined and effective response from public authorities. These include: ensuring the economic prosperity and sustainable development of our cities and regions, creating new opportunities for employment, strengthening social cohesion, and protecting our environment for future generations. These challenges can only be properly addressed if the different levels of public administration - cities and regions, national governments, and European institutions - are all working together.

EUROCITIES is the network of major European cities. Founded in 1986, the network brings together the local governments of more than 130 large cities in over 30 European countries. EUROCITIES provides a platform for its member cities to share knowledge and ideas, to exchange experiences, to analyse common problems and develop innovative solutions, through a wide range of Forums, Working Groups, Projects, activities and events.

EUROCITIES gives cities a voice in Europe, by engaging in dialogue with the European institutions on all aspects of EU legislation, policies and programmes that have an impact on cities and their citizens. The network is active across a wide range of policy areas including: economic development and cohesion policy, provision of public services, environment, transport and mobility, employment and social affairs, culture, education, information and knowledge society, governance and international cooperation.

Eurocities activities

Networking - Sharing and improving knowledge
By taking part in Forums, Working Groups and Projects, EUROCITIES members have opportunities to address a wide range of urban issues and challenges. Cities can learn from each other by sharing knowledge, exchanging experiences, comparing different approaches, testing innovative solutions and analysing best practices. Alongside the advantages for the participating cities, these thematic activities also provide a sound basis for the development of EUROCITIES policy positions and proposals.

Lobbying - Developing and influencing policies
EUROCITIES provides a strong voice for cities in the European Union, and actively contributes to the development and implementation of European policies, legislation and programmes which are relevant for cities. EUROCITIES is an important partner for dialogue with the European Commission, both on the political level (by taking part in the "Territorial Dialogue") and on the technical level. EUROCITIES also maintains close contacts with the Committee of the Regions, the European Parliament and the Member States.

Campaigning - Raising public awareness
EUROCITIES brings forward its policy priorities by developing Europe-wide campaigns on issues of common concern, such as sustainable mobility and responsible consumption. These campaigns are aimed at raising awareness and changing behaviour both within municipal authorities and also among citizens, whose active support and cooperation is often essential for achieving policy objectives, especially at the local level.
